Victron Lithium Battery Protection System

Protects every cell of lithium-ion batteries. Applicable for 12, 24 and 48-volt systems. There is a 1000A contactor that serves as a second battery protection. Thus, when necessary, the batteries are switched off and excessive discharge of the batteries is prevented, which could damage them.

With or without battery management system

Important facts:

  •      An LFP battery can be damaged if its cell voltage drops below 2.5V;
  •      An LFP battery can be damaged if its cell voltage exceeds 4.2V;
  •      Lead-acid batteries will - - fail if over-discharged or over-charged at high voltages, but not immediately;
  •      Lead-acid batteries will recover after a full discharge, even if they are left discharged for several days or weeks (depending on the model and manufacturer);
  •      The cells of an LFP-ion battery will not automatically level at the end of a charge;
  •      Battery cells are not 100% the same. Therefore, during operation, some cells will be fully charged or discharged earlier than others. The difference will increase if the cells are not equalized (balanced) from time to time;
  •      In lead-acid batteries, a small current will continue to flow even if one or more cells are fully charged (the main effect of this process is the decomposition of water into hydrogen and oxygen). This current helps to fully charge the remaining cells that are behind in the charge and thus equalizes the state of charge of all the cells.

In addition, the battery balancing system with BMS will

  •      Prevent low cell voltage by temporarily switching off the load;
  •      Avoid high cell voltage by stopping the charge;
  •      Shut down the system in case of overheating.
